a lot of people put them in the post-rock category, but i would define them as post-punk almost no-wave. it's all about the angular guitar sounds and pounding drums.
one obvious suggestion is for carnation, the band that formed out of slint. and any of dave pajo's solo releases.

| I've been listening to lots of Nina Simone. I'm reading her autobiography and I've just been getting more and more enthused about her. Especially her stuff that's just her and piano more like Nina Simone and the Piano and Little Girl Blue. |
